October 2, 2024, 87, Goldsboro —
Shirley Ann Greene West, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born in Johnston County on November 24, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Ernest Green and Eva Thompson Greene.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-five years, William (Billy) Houston West, Jr.; son, William (Bill) Houston West, III; sister Annie Ruth Hilliard and husband, Dan; father, and mother-in-law, Houston and Lotha West; and sister-in-law, Peggy Scroggs.
Shirley is survived by her children, Christie West Ivey and husband, Robert, and Ricky West; grandchildren, Ashley Ivey Anderson and husband, Charlie, Allie West Tyndall and husband, Gunner, Cody Ivey and wife, Savannah, Neal West, and BJ Masters; and 14 great-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Jean West; brother-in-law, Alan Scroggs; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Shirley stayed home with her children until they began school, where she began work as a teacher’s assistant. In the mid-70s, she began her thirty-plus-year career at Wayne Memorial Hospital where she served in various positions. When not at work, she could be found outside enjoying her flowers and the hummingbirds that they attracted. During the month of March, everything was put on hold so Shirley could keep up with her North Carolina Tar Heels. She would often utilize her vacation time to make sure she could properly cheer them on.
Nothing was more important to Shirley than her Faith and family. She was a member of the Goldsboro Worship Center. She volunteered as a greeter for many years, always welcoming guests with a smile on her face. Her love for her family knew no bounds. Each moment spent together with her family was a memory she cherished forever. Shirley will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
A service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Johnson presiding. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. A private interment will be held on Monday at Wayne Memorial Park.
Flowers are welcomed, or memorials may be sent to Samaritan’s Purse P.O. Box 3000 Boone, NC 28607 to assist with the Hurricane Helene relief efforts in memory of Shirley.
