October 2, 2024, 78, Goldsboro —
Jack Laughlin went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, in Goldsboro, NC, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born in Asheboro, NC to the Rev. Charles and Alice Laughlin on December 20, 1945. He was married to his loving wife Nancy Riddle Laughlin for 55 years. Jack and Nancy married on June 1, 1969, and graduated that same day from East Carolina University. Jack received his Bachelor of Science Degree and later his Masters Degree in Education from ECU. He was delayed from entering a teaching career by serving two years in the US Army, including a tour of duty as a combat medic in Vietnam. After returning home he taught history in Goldsboro High School West and East for 28 years. After retiring from teaching, he worked for 12 years in the pro shop of the Goldsboro Golf Course.
Complementing his history teaching career, Jack was an avid reader of history, completing at least one book a week. Consequently, hundreds of his books were donated to the Goldsboro High School and Wayne County Libraries. He was also a man of many talents and interests including writing poetry, playing guitar, gardening, golfing vacations, trips to the family farm in the NC mountains, travel abroad, and the challenges of modern technology.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Nancy Bridges and Barbara Lou Murray. He is survived by his sister Charlene (Billy), his brother Dr. John Laughlin (Dr. Janet), brother-in-law Lee Herrington, sister-in-law Lucille Herrington, and sister-in-law Kathryn Geniec. Also surviving are several cherished nieces and nephews and their children.
At Jack’s request, no formal ceremony is planned, but a memorial service may be held later. Jack will be buried in the Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Mars Hill, NC with graveside services at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12. Officiating will be Rev. Barry Williamson, a pastor at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church where Jack attended.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Paralyzed Veterans of America or Samaritan’s Purse earmarked for the WNC Flood.
