From the Skies to the Classroom: Janaei Fargo’s Journey Back to College

After serving 18 years in the United States Air Force, Janaei Fargo is preparing for her next big mission: transitioning to civilian life with a degree in Human Resources from the University of Mount Olive.

Enrolling at UMO in January 2023, Fargo is set to graduate in December 2025, marking a significant milestone in her life as she pursues a new career path.

Fargo’s journey to UMO began in upstate New York, where she attended Monroe Community College for a year and a half.

Now, as a student at UMO, Fargo is focused on achieving her degree in Human Resources, a field that aligns with her passion for helping others behind the scenes.

Fargo’s life has been marked by service, both in her family and in the Air Force.

Growing up as one of seven children, with a mother who was a lifelong missionary, Fargo traveled the world from a young age.

Seeking a greater purpose, she enlisted in the Air Force Reserves at 25, where she has served diligently for nearly two decades.

Fargo’s military career began as a KC-135 and C-130 hydraulic mechanic from 2006 to 2018.

This role paved the way for her transition into the education and training career field, where she took on roles with increasing responsibility.

Currently, Fargo serves as the interim Base Training Manager and Subject Matter Expert for the 916th Air Refueling Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Her dedication to education is evident in her work.

“Education is the most important thing and can never be taken away,” Fargo said.

Balancing a demanding career, personal life, and education has been challenging for Fargo, but her determination keeps her focused.

“It has been tough,” Fargo said. “I definitely don’t have a lot of free time, but I have a goal, and I will achieve it.”

Fargo has received numerous accolades for her work, including being named Civilian of the Quarter twice and Senior Civilian of the Quarter for FY 23 and FY 24, respectively.

Her achievements demonstrate her commitment to excellence and her ability to excel in various roles.

As graduation approaches, Fargo looks forward to celebrating with her family, who will travel to North Carolina to witness her success.

Her journey from Rochester, NY, to Goldsboro, and from the Air Force to the classroom, is a testament to her resilience and determination to build a bright future.

Fargo’s journey back to college is not just about earning a degree but about fulfilling a lifelong commitment to learning and serving others.
