With profound sorrow and sadness, Craig & Martha Casey and the staff of Casey Funeral Home and Cremations humbly announce the earthly transition of Mother Scottie Mildred Walker-Smith. Mrs. Smith made her earthly transition into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 11:22 pm in her home in Princeton surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Johnston County on November 4, 1933, to the late Warren Henry Walker and Gertrude Mitchell Walker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Smith, brothers Ravon Walker, and O’Conner Walker, sister-in-law Mattie Walker, Nathaniel Walker, and sister-in-law Sallie Mae Walker and three other infant brothers and sisters and grandson Julius Crenshaw.
Scottie Smith was very active in community activities having served on several boards including the Board of Johnson-Lee Community Action for 5 years, East Central Legal Services for 5 years, and State Legal Services Board, N.C. State Client Council and Mother Board at her churches.
Mrs. Smith was employed during the 1970s with Princeton Manufacturing Company, but due to her ailing parents, she had to resign to take care of them. Later, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, she did extensive volunteer community work for East Central Community Legal Services and Johnston-Lee Community Action. Over the next 12 years, she worked as a companion housekeeper for an elderly lady and was employed with Britthaven Nursing Home as a nursing assistant. During this time, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and after having a mastectomy continued to work at Britthaven with lighter duties as well as a Ward Clerk. After resigning due to continuing physical challenges at work, she began a calling to volunteer in many areas where senior citizens needed help, advice, or an advocate to appear on their behalf at Town Hall, Social Services, or anywhere that a “strong” voice was needed. Helping people to go and be able to Vote was very important to her.
Mother Scottie felt helping individuals who may not know how to ask for help or assistance or express their needs or concerns was a way she could promote a helping hand, kind heart, and compassion to others at a time when they may feel alone, isolated, and/or forgotten.
Being a blessing to others was a way she could share her faith in Jesus Christ and promote her Christian values.
She is survived by her sons, Steven Smith (Sherry) of Smithfield, and Dexter Smith (JoAnn) of Princeton, N.C.; daughter Jacquelyn T. Smith, Princeton, N.C.; grandchildren, Tiffany Bizzell, Justin Price-Smith, Jessica Smith, Brittany Smith and Natalie Smith; great-grandchildren, Juawn, Jordyn and Jaya; nephews, Roger Walker (Eleanor), Warren Young; nieces, Wanda Walker Blake, whom she loved as a daughter, Bertha Stancil Sanders (James) and a host of great nieces and nephews; Goddaughter, Jaci Bizzell; special friends, Mother Frances Scarboro and Mother Mae Gloria Stevens. A special thank you to her caregivers Valerie Richardson and JoAnn Smith and also to Robin and Erin at Johnston Home Health and Hospice for their loving and compassionate care, and especially to James at Wayne Pharmacy.
The family especially appreciates the Princeton Community for all of their cards, visits, food, and prayers during the past 3 years.
A walk thru visitation will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024 from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home and Cremations, Princeton, N.C.
The Home Going Celebration Service will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home and Cremations Chapel, Princeton, N.C. Elder Danny Atkinson will serve as Presider with Elder Tyrone Haney delivering the sermon. She will be laid to rest at Princeton Cemetery immediately following the funeral. A Repast will be held immediately following the burial at the home.
