Georgia Benton Thornton, 83, peacefully passed away at home on November 3, 2024. She was a Wayne County native and daughter of the late Luby (Joe) and Dora Lee Goodson Benton and wife of 51 years to the late James William Thornton. Georgia was a former employee of W.P. Rose Supply Company and Sherwin Williams Paint Company. In her high school years at Seven Springs School, Georgia was Captain of the Girl’s Basketball Team. She was well known in her community for her good country cooking of Chicken Pastry and Pecan Pies and for remembering family and friends with a card or phone call on their birthdays and special occasions.
Georgia is survived by her beloved two daughters who cared for her when her health began to decline, Shannon (Randy) Kersey of the home and Gwen (Hughy) Mozingo of Goldsboro, NC. They were by her side attending to all of her needs. Also grieving their loss are her two granddaughters, Blair Corser and Shalyn (George) Jones, and four great-grandchildren, Lillyan, Lavanna, Ella Grace, and J.D.; a sister, Betty (George) Ross of Denver, CO, and brother, Tommy Benton of Clayton, NC and many special nieces and nephews all of whom she loved very much.
In addition to her husband, Georgia was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Liddia Jones; three sisters, Adell Jones, Bertha Lynch, and JoAnn Barfield; and two brothers, Linwood Ralph Benton and Donald Benton.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. Pastor Dave Fishman of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where Georgia was a lifelong member, will officiate. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 US-117 Hwy., Dudley NC 28333.
