November 29, 2024, 84, Goldsboro —
Peter Lynn Sherrick, 84, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024, surrounded by family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC. Born in Howell, Michigan on July 22, 1940, he was the son of the late Donald E. and Catherine Compton Sherrick.
In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Ruth Anne McFadden Sherrick.
Pete is survived by his wife of 8 years, Barbara Watson Phillips; daughters, Anne Kuhns and husband, Mark of Pikeville, N,C and Barbara Knighton and husband, Keith of Fowlerville, MI; granddaughters, Karen and Daniel McKnight, Jessica and Tim Harrison, Sandra and Jason Steed, Debra and Zachary Coleman, Rebecca Kuhns; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Linda Dowsett.
Pete graduated from South Lyon High School in 1958. He furthered his education at Lawrence Technological University, graduating in 1964, and then began his automotive engineering career with Chrysler. He became a project engineer, often changing companies as he started new projects. He was a long-time member of the Detroit chapter of the SAE, the Society of Automotive Engineers. Pete was proud to earn a patent for his work at Eaton. Throughout his working career, Pete worked for Chrysler, Rockwell, Dana-Spicer, Eaton, Oldsmobile/General Motors, and finally back to Chrysler where he retired from work in 2010.
Pete was the family problem solver. If something broke down or didn’t work, you called him and he either came to fix it himself or talked you through how to do it yourself. Pete loved traveling and visiting new places, especially visiting his beloved family. He enjoyed golfing, camping, and just being outdoors.
Serving his community was important to Pete. A life-long member of the United Methodist Church, he volunteered to help create and maintain a church garden. He participated in the WWW, The Wednesday Willing Workers, to fix things and solve problems around the church’s property, as well as assist his wife, Ruth by creating hand-made rugs to decorate the sanctuary. Other volunteer organizations he supported were Meals on Wheels, the Pontiac Homeless Shelter, and building sets for the Avon Players, a local community theater. He was a member of the Elks for over 4 decades, mostly at the Lansing, MI lodge where Pete served as the Bingo chair.
A service to celebrate Pete’s life will be held at a later date in the spring in his home state of Michigan.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
