Gaye Lancaster Hare, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Somerset Court in Goldsboro. Gaye was born in Wayne County to the late Lonnie J. Lancaster and Henrietta Pate Lancaster on May 25, 1944. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Ray Hare and brother, Harold Lancaster.
A proud member of the first graduating class of Charles B. Aycock High School in 1962, Gaye went on to serve as a teacher of the Apple-Dumplin Day Care in Pikeville. She also volunteered for many years as the Director of the Queen of the Fair at the Wayne County Agriculture Fair.
For Gaye, no singer was ever as talented or as great a showman as Elvis Presley. One of his biggest fans, she always felt better when she could hear his music.
Kind-hearted, Gaye possessed a sweet soul that offered love to all she met. In her, you could easily find a generous friend. A longtime member of Mount Carmel Church, Gaye worshiped faithfully with her church family.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2025 in the fellowship hall of Mount Carmel Church. A service to celebrate Gaye’s life will be at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Amy Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in the Pikeville Cemetery.
Gaye is survived by her daughter, Susan Hare; son, Chris Hare; daughter-in-law, Mitzi Hare; grandchildren, Madison Hare (Jonathan), Kristen Hare and Presley Herring; and great-grandchildren, Isabella and Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Gaye’s memory to Mount Carmel Church, P.O. Box 10, Pikeville, NC 27863 or to Gentiva Hospice, 2309 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
