Gerald Keith Herring, Jr., 66, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Wayne County on January 2, 1959, he was the son of the late Gerald Keith Herring, Sr. and Peggy Uzzell Herring.
Gerald is survived by his siblings, Melanie Herring Woodard (Clint), Timothy Uzzell Herring (Wanda), Angelia Herring Jones (Cleve); nieces and nephews, Paige Whitfield (Ryan), Scotty Boyette (Courtney), Courtney Grant (Kyle), Keith Jones, Janey Parks (Kyle), and Abby Jones; great-nieces and nephews, Lanie, Lillie, Luke, Everitt, Beckett, Maddie, Anna, Emmie, and Jude; aunts, Mary Ann Herring and Sue Neal; and special cousins, Mary Jo Evan and Laura Dudley. He is also survived by his special lifelong friends, Linwood Stewart and Gregory Brown.
Graduating from Eastern Wayne High School, Gerald was a member of the marching band where he utilized his gifts and talents playing the cymbals. His sense of rhythm and ear for music made him a great asset to the drumline. Recognizing his talent and wanting to further his studies, Gerald went on to attend East Carolina University, receiving a dual Master’s degree in music performance and education.
Employed as an elementary school teacher for his entire career, Gerald served the students of Wayne County Public Schools until his retirement. Additionally, he offered service to his Lord as musician at several local churches including Bethel Church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, and St. Francis Episcopal Church. Also serving for a time as Director of Music Ministries at Mount Olive Methodist Church.
A service to celebrate Gerald’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025 at St. Francis Episcopal Church with Father David Wyly officiating. A private Interment will follow in the Providence Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
