Margie Lee Barnes Bass, 85, peacefully passed away on Saturday February 1, 2025 at Smithfield Manor. Born in Wilson County on March 2, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Fletcher Lee Barnes and Alma Holland Barnes.
In addition to her parents, Margie is preceded in death by her husband, Barney Bass; and siblings, James “Man” Barnes, Peggy Ferrell, Mary Frances “Sue” Walston, and Cathy Davis-Edgerton.
Margie is survived by her children, Johnny Turner Bass of Kenly, and Sandra Gupere-Lundquist and husband, Steven of Princeton; grandchildren, Johna Sliger and husband, Mike, and Dylan Gupere and wife, Ivey; great-grandchildren, Ryland Reinhard, Mikali Sliger, Emery Sliger, and Annalee Gupere; and siblings, Fletcher Lee Barnes, Jr. or Laurinburg, Bettie Ann Shaffer and husband, Chris of Sayre, PA, and Pattie Ann Moore and husband, Bob of Clarksburg, WV. Margie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Margie’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith, dedication, and love for her family. She was an active and devoted member of Hickory Cross Gospel Center where she shared her love for others through her service and as a Sunday School teacher in years past. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she poured love and wisdom into everyone she met.
Margie had a special passion for keeping her yard meticulously cared for, finding peace and satisfaction in the beauty of nature. She took great pride in the small things that made life so wonderful, from tending to her garden to creating a welcoming space for those she loved.
Above all, Margie adored her family, and nothing brought her more joy than the time spent with her beloved great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched with her kindness, strength, and love.
A service to celebrate Margie’s life will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Entombment will take place on Friday, February 7, 2025 at Kenly Cemetery at 11 a.m.
To all the nurses and staff of Smithfield Manor, the family would like to extend their deepest and most sincere thanks to each of you for the love, care, and compassion you showed to Margie during her time with you, especially Jazz, Shante, and Sue. Your hard work and compassion make the world a better place, and the family was incredibly blessed to have had Margie in your care.
