GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Over 50 eighth-grade students and their families got a firsthand look at their futures during Wayne Community College’s Middle School Night, an event designed to introduce young learners to college pathways and career possibilities.
Students began the evening with an overview of WCC’s academic programs and learned about the financial advantages of community college, including dual enrollment opportunities during high school.
Participants then toured the campus in small groups, guided by WCC faculty, exploring two academic areas of their choice. Along the way, students engaged in hands-on activities in real classrooms and labs. From trivia games in arts and sciences to one-on-one conversations with Aviation Systems Technology instructors, the event was designed to spark curiosity and ambition.
Parents and guardians took advantage of the opportunity to speak with student services staff about financial aid, admissions, counseling, and career resources.
“My son got to ask questions directly to the instructors, which gave him real perspective,” said Angela Pantastico, mother of student Archer Pantastico.
For homeschooler Akil Smallwood, exploring science and welding programs was both informative and fun. His mother, Sharina Gandy, appreciated how the event helped her son explore his interests in a meaningful way. “This was the perfect opportunity for him to get knowledge from the people who are actually teaching the courses,” she said.
WCC’s Middle School Night emphasized early engagement, helping students take their first steps toward informed and inspired career paths.
