Lucy Rogers Watson

April 10, 2025, 85, Goldsboro —

Lucy Rogers Watson, 85, peacefully passed away at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield on Thursday, April 10, 2025. Born in Wilson County on June 14, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Isaac Rogers and Louise Barnes Rogers. Lucy was a light in every room, a friend to all, and a woman whose warmth, laughter, and love touched countless lives. She passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and unwavering joy.

In addition to her parents, Lucy is preceded in death by her loving husband, Stephen Carl Watson; brothers, Thomas Rogers, Jr., and Allen Rogers; and sisters, Nancy Rogers Griffin and Adelia Cooper.

Lucy is survived by her son, Steve Watson (Loretta); granddaughters, Stephanie Fitts (Tyler) and Chelsea Watson (Alex Fitts); great-grandchildren, Lakelyn West, Tatum Fitts, Scarlett Fitts and one on the way, Lucy James Fitts. Lucy is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Abbott Rogers; special niece, Jonelle Aycock Mason, who visit with Lucy often; and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family that she deeply loved.

For many years, Lucy made her mark as a beloved hairdresser, not just with her skillful hands but with her caring heart. She treated every client like family, always ready with a listening ear and a smile that could brighten even the cloudiest day.

Later in life, Lucy found another calling—serving as a special education teacher with Johnston County Public Schools. Her compassion, patience, and deep understanding made her a natural in the classroom. She was a tireless advocate for her students, giving each one the attention and encouragement they deserved.

Alongside her devoted husband, Steve, Lucy co-owned and operated Remember Me Florist, a place as full of color and life, just as she was. Their shared passion brought beauty to countless weddings, celebrations, and remembrances throughout the community.

Lucy was the devoted wife of the drummer for The O’Kaysions, Steve Watson, and her life was deeply intertwined with the rhythm and soul of beach music. With a warm smile and an infectious love for the sounds of the Carolina coast, she was a constant presence by her husband’s side—cheering him on from backstage, singing along to every note, and sharing in the joy that the music brought to so many. Her passion for the genre wasn’t just about the melodies—it was about the memories, the dancing, and the community that surrounded it. Lucy’s spirit will always be part of that timeless beat. Lucy had a deep love for shaggin—her dancing feet and joyful spirit never missed a beat. Whether on the dance floor or just in passing, she never met a stranger. Her gift for making people feel seen and welcomed was simply part of who she was.

She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Lucy’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well lived.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Kenly Funeral Service. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 2 p.m. in Kenly Cemetery with Pastor Sammy Evans presiding.
