High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest of Raleigh Woman in Kinston; Child Passenger Involved

KINSTON, N.C. — What began as a routine traffic stop became a high-speed pursuit through Kinston on Friday that led to a Raleigh woman’s arrest and raised disturbing questions after it was learned that an 8-year-old child was also in the vehicle.

The Kinston Police Department stated that officers from the C-Squad attempted to stop a vehicle on April 11. The driver, identified as 50-year-old Jeannette Darden of Raleigh, refused to stop and led police in a pursuit that ended when she collided with a fence.

After the wreck, Darden allegedly ran off on foot, child in tow. Officers quickly caught up with her and took her into custody. The child was not hurt, authorities said.

Darden has an extensive list of charges, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, felony possession of cocaine, two counts of felony assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, misdemeanor child abuse, and various driving offenses, including DWI and driving with a revoked license. She also had an outstanding warrant for a probation violation out of a different county.

She is being detained in the Lenoir County Jail.

The police have not disclosed how Darden is connected to the child, and the investigation is ongoing.
