Walmart Unveils Major Investment in North Carolina Stores, Associates, and Communities in 2025

Raleigh, N.C. — On Thursday, Walmart strengthened its footprint in North Carolina with a sweeping investment plan in 2025 that includes remodeling 41 stores, enhancing associate opportunities, and expanding community support efforts. The announcement reinforces Walmart’s continued commitment to being the state’s most accessible and community-driven shopping destination.

“Our stores often serve as the heartbeat of the communities we operate in,” said Annie Walker, Senior Vice President, East Business Unit at Walmart. “By investing in our stores and associates, we are not only improving the shopping experience but also reinforcing our commitment to being a vital part of the community’s fabric.”

Upgrading the Shopping Experience Across the State

Part of a national goal to remodel over 650 locations this year, the 41 North Carolina store upgrades will bring exciting changes to the customer experience. Enhancements include bold new signage, reimagined merchandise displays, expanded departments, and upgraded online pickup and delivery infrastructure. Pharmacy sections will also be modernized with wider aisles and private consultation spaces.

This builds on the $682 million Walmart has already invested in North Carolina store improvements over the past five years.

Notable store remodels in cities like Charlotte, Greensboro, Fayetteville, Asheville, and Durham are already planned for 2025.

Empowering Associates with Growth and Benefits

Walmart employs over 62,000 associates across its 214 retail units and six supply chain facilities in North Carolina. The company was recently named one of the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® and among LinkedIn’s Top Companies for 2025.

Key workforce highlights include:

  • More than 32,900 hourly associates in North Carolina received bonuses in March.
  • 3,824 associates were promoted to higher-paying roles last year.
  • 5,729 part-time associates transitioned to full-time roles.
  • Around 75% of Walmart’s frontline managers began as hourly employees.

Walmart also continues to provide access to no-cost college degrees through its Live Better U program, competitive 401(k) and stock plans, paid leave, mental health support, and a complimentary Walmart+ membership.

Investing in North Carolina Communities

Walmart’s commitment extends beyond the store. In fiscal year 2024, Walmart, Sam’s Club, and the Walmart Foundation donated over $54.5 million to local organizations across North Carolina. Additionally, the company contributed more than 25.8 million pounds of food—equivalent to 21.5 million meals—to local food banks in fiscal year 2025.

Walmart also spent $9.2 billion with North Carolina-based suppliers last year, supporting over 86,300 local jobs.

From frontline associates to food donations and revitalized shopping spaces, Walmart’s 2025 investment strategy is shaping the future of retail in North Carolina while reinforcing its deep ties to the people and communities it serves.
