Wayne County’s Summer Youth Program Expands Under Commissioner Antonio Williams’ Leadership

Wayne County, N.C. (April 28, 2025 ) District 2 County Commissioner Antonio Williams is championing a thriving summer youth program that has grown significantly since its launch as a pilot in 2020. Originally established during Williams’ tenure as a Goldsboro City Council member, the program is now in its fourth year at the county level, offering paid summer work experience to local youth.

“When I was on the City Council, I fought to bring this program to life,” said Williams. “The city ran it for two years, but even after they discontinued it, we knew it was too valuable to let go. So, we kept it going through the county—and it’s only grown since.”

What began with just 30 students has expanded to 40 participants last year, with even more expected this summer. The program, which runs for six weeks, offers youth ages 16 to 21 the chance to work up to 20 hours a week in various county departments. Participants are paid $12 an hour and gain practical skills and exposure to public service careers—from EMS and legal offices to animal rescue and planning departments.

Williams emphasized the program’s purpose: “It’s about more than just a job. It’s about learning how local government works, gaining financial literacy, and building confidence. We’ve seen kids come in quiet and unsure, and leave outgoing and ready for the world.”

One of the standout features is the program’s pathway to long-term employment and education. High school graduates who complete the program can be hired by the county, and those who stay on are eligible for funding to attend community college and earn an associate degree.

“This is a real chance to build a future,” Williams added. “You can turn this summer opportunity into a career.”

In addition to practical work experience, the program counts as an internship for high school and college students, allowing them to earn academic credit. Applications opened April 1 and will close on April 30. Interested candidates must reside in Wayne County and should visit waynegov.com to apply.

Key upcoming dates include:

  • Interview Day: May 23 (Dress professionally!)
  • Orientation: June 17

“There’s nothing like seeing young people excited to learn, grow, and take that first step into the workforce,” said Williams. “Come prepared, come eager, and show us you’re ready to work.”

The program culminates in a celebratory banquet, where participants and their families enjoy food and reflect on their accomplishments. Many youth return to participate in future summers, a testament to the program’s positive impact.
