Commissioners Approve Funding For School Land Purchase

Dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s as Wayne County takes steps to build a new elementary school.

Last week, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners approved using $312,000 in WCPS sales tax funds for the purchase of 20.8 acres from Evans Farms in Fremont.

County Manager Craig Honeycutt explained that property would be used for the proposed Fremont Elementary School project.

Commissioner Wayne Aycock assured the money would be spent wisely, even in the uncertain times.

County Board Chair Ray Mayo reminded the money for the land purchase would not come out of the county’s fund balance.

This additional approval for using the sales tax funds was a necessary step because the county board had restricted any future spending of the WCPS sales tax funds to cover any overages with the Southern Wayne High School gymnasium project.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education already approved purchasing the land and jointly applying for Tier 1 Lottery grant funds for the construction of the school building.
